Hi everyone, hope you're doing well. I thought I would talk about a musical group I've been listening to.
It's not uncommon for me to get really obsessed with a specific musician. This might be no different, but the duo Bassvictim have been on my radar for a few months now. In music that combines elements from electronic, punk, indie sleaze, they've crafted music that is quite literally perfect for the revival we are seeing in electronic music right now.
Bassvictim is made of Ike Clateman and Maria Manow. The two met at a show in Berlin, and initially didn't get along well with each other.
However, when they ran into each other months later in London, they decided to collaborate and start making music together. They are now based out of London. Clateman also has a solo project under the name RIP wowaka.
I think what makes their music so good is that it is a modern take on some of the music that was coming out twenty, thirty years ago. In fact, they even made a name for their music genre: Basspunk.
Basspunk is also the name of their first EP. My favorites from this album are "I Like It", "Canary Wharf Drift" and "As Long As."
Their other music projects also prove to be strong. Their most recent release, Basspunk 2, features a collection of upbeat, loud songs that give the listener no choice but to bop their head to the beat. My personal favorites off this album are "With You", "Makes You Wonder" and "Wooden Girl."
Something about finding an artist that can show consistency in the production of quality music makes me so much more likely to be a fan of them. It's also just nice to see younger artists creating new music, new genres, mixing things together that seem unconventional.
I think nowadays it can get easy to fall into the trap of doing what everyone else is doing--even though we're supposed to live in the country that strives off individualism--and it becomes a toxic, harmful environment for creating what could possibly be the next big thing.
On top of that, it's almost impossible to break into the music industry, so supporting independent artists who actually enjoy making music and trusting that process is crucial.
In a short but sweet post, I am going to wrap it up here. You should check out Bassvictim if you like electronic music. And if you don't, maybe you should give them a listen anyway. Until next time, cheers!
